Oh, ondine, I loved the 'Newman' thing. I had no idea what it meant. But somehow, it didn't really matter. it was so in Kennedy's voice that it never jutted out. It just sounded like the sort of thing an East Coast rich girl skate punk would say. One thing I would have like to seen more on the series, but what you did (far better than I), was give Kennedy her own slang, something a little less SoCal.

Constructive criticsm is good, however people that have nitpicks with my stories have always emailed me. I apreciate that, too, especially when they don't understand something, ecause if it's there for the public to read it could be embarassing.
I'd love to leave more feedback, but I honestly haven't read that many stories on the site. It was easy to keep up at first, but now there's a lot of authors registered and a heck of a lot of stories that it's hard to find the time.
As for weird things, I carry a tape recorder around wih me. I'm a writer, and I get ideas for original fiction, as well as fan, a lot and I either write it down or tape it. The taping thing, however, is mostly when I wake up in the middle of the night or something.
Also, I tend to write later, as well. Another night olw here! And, I tried that writing in the dark...man, it is really weird to see how well you might know the keyboard. It was pretty cool and I actually enjoyed it!

Heehee... yeah, the "Newman" thing was totally 'huh?' to me, but I trust your writing by now - I know that you'll let the reader know later on what deal with that one is... Or then you'll let it be unexplained until the DVD version comes out and you get to do the commentary track... (sorry, got BtVS Season 4 last night and watched Joss Whedon's commentary on the last ep to find out that the cheese man really didn't mean anything and that was the point of it!).
About the slang, yeah, I've totally tried to figure out 'Kennedish' but there's not that much to work on, unfortunately. Plus I've got this huge disadvantage, not really knowing THAT much about different American dialects/accents/slang. It sort of irritates me, 'cause I know I can't play around with things like that as much as an American could. So I'll have to work in a slightly different way to make the words fit Kennedy's mouth, not always knowing whether it's successful or not.
Iyari Limon and Allyson Hannigan both have very interesting voices and ways of speaking when doing their characters.. (That quiet little clicking throat-sound Willow does is just so totally adorable!) Oh the multitude of unspoken words Kennedy leaves floating in the air with lines like "You haven't been going out there much, have you?" (the Bronze -scene in The Killer in Me). She's sensual, playful, teasing, flirty... and I keep hearing a dozen thoughts Kennedy might have at that point. And it's all in the melody of her voice. Converting it to text is sometimes quite a challenge... but well, luckily, fanfic readers are sort of familiar with the voices and ways of speaking from before...

ondine said: I know what you mean, it would be nice to get some thoughtful, constructive -- well, not criticism, I'm weak and fragile. But responses that are more detailed. You know what I would LOVE? If people asked questions! "Why did you have Kennedy do such and such?" "What does *Newman* mean?" I can't believe nobody asked about that being in my stories.
Yes and no to the asking questions... obvious plotline things I don't like to be questioned about, usually, for the simple reason that I'm going to answer them at some point in the story itself... or not. But questions like "how come she doesn't get bothered even though X keeps doing Y?" or something might be good.
As for the criticism, as long as it is constructive and given in a nice tone of voice, I don't mind hearing it. I'm a big girl. There is a huge difference between criticisms like "Ur plot suxx!" and "The plot feels somehow inconsequent... I find it hard to believe that X would behave this way. Doesn't X usually ((insert character traits))?"
And yes, if you feel like the person might be hurt by a public criticism of this sort, then e-mail the comments instead... and hope that the person won't take it personally, but as a sincere comment to help one out as a writer. (Obviously, if one is just out there to bash the writers, then the best thing one can do is just to shut up - no point in crushing people's self-confidence).

that is too funny! What a concept, commentary tracks for fanfic!! I have the S4 DVD but haven't listened to any of the commentary yet. I already knew the Cheese Man didn't mean anything, which is why he didn't mean anything when I used him in Kennedy's dream in my story "WEEK IN THE LIFE".
I had more fun writing that dream than anything!! RECKLESS might be one of my most favorite eps, so it was fun to rip it off. I mean, of course, "model a portion of my own story on it."

Hey, listen to the commentary on Wild at Heart with Seth Green, Joss, and Marti Noxon. It's almost like Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Those are some of the funniest people ever. Joss's Speed Racer overdub is worth the price of the DVD alone...

I found that most readers like stories with angst and twists. One thing I try to remember when I write is... Do... Not... Rush. Take your time, draw out the story and give it 'flavor'.
Oh, and use a beta reader. It's really hard for readers to read a story or stay interested when they're distracted by grammatical and spelling errors.

Oooo must respond to this, well more to Al's comment about using a beta. I totally agree! Do let it beta by someone, or at least check it yourself 5 times before you upload it. It's quite annoying when reading a fic and suddenly you see a spelling error or a typo or whatever, takes away the concentration. A few days ago I was reading a fic, and it said something like, (pure example here but it's about the your/you're bit) your a bird. Now it bugged me, ha, cos it's you're. So I got distracted and was kinda off it. So people, use a beta! Really, the person will help you with your story and errors, it's really handy! -xxx-

And how! Gramatical errors really bug me in fics...and if I ever have one it's usually by accident or something. I totally agree that it's so much harder to read something when there's no paragraph structure or someone mistakes or mispells a word.

Oh yes, the old your/you're deal... makes me grimace every time. Numerous typoes and spelling errors bother the readers more than one expects... yes, using a beta (or several) is a good idea.
Betas are so much more than just typoslayers, though... Some of them provide valuable pointers about the text in general. Hopefully they tell you if something in the storyline is too abrupt/out of character or something, or suggest alternative choices of words/POVs/whatever... and ask questions like "How come she does this?", "What about that, how does that fit in?" etc, sometimes accidentally even causing new ideas in the evil mind of the author..
Oh the endless possibilities of using betas... But how to find a matching beta for oneself? Myself, I've just ruthlessly recruited people, preferably very different type of people to get a wide sample of views..

How true that is... it was just yesterday *ponders* No it was today but early this morning, ha, that I had pesky questions like that! Teehee, but they did gave me an idea for my next chapter -xxx-

Is it a bad thing that I have to come up with some new story to work on when the current one isn't even finished? Well, Just so you guys know, I've got a head full of ideas, and I really am not sure what to work on next. Note: a couple of these are non-Kennedy stories, and one of them I'm sure will elicit revulsion from everybody.
Idea 1= I want to wrap up this little Willow/Kennedy trilogy started with Mirror, Mirror and over to The Thrill is Gone. Problem: I haven't the foggiest idea what to do. I honestly wasn't expecting Thrill to go so long, or cover so much ground. I'd like to do something a little more mystical and interpersonal, With far less fight scenes (I really overloaded Thrill with action, in my opinion.) So I know I want to get more character, more drama, and less angst... How I'm gonna do that, I have no Idea. Kennedy is such an action hero; her first response is to hit it until it stops twitching. So getting her to work in a Drama piece requires some monkeywrenching with the situation. What's more, It's gotta fit with my trilogy format. The third story is usually the climax-resolution of the story. So, there.
Idea 2 - The most hated Idea I will ever pitch: I've had an idea for a political/military/occult thriller based on Riley's adventure in Tibet... I know, take the most hated character and give him his own fic? I must be mad! But dig the synopsis: A group of special forces and mystics are sent to stop a doomsday cult from raising a demon in the Himalayas. Problem is, China's old guard communist generals refuse to acknowledge the existance of the supernatural. They take the activity as a sign of insurgents trying to liberate Tibet. Riley is dropped at the LZ with his wife and team, only to find that the Red Army is already there, and worse still, their intel is two weeks late: the demon is up and mobile. Think Tom Clancy and Harlan Ellison have a baby and let it smoke crack. Then, you're getting the idea. Not a popular fic, but it could be really good, or tank like the bloody Ticonderoga: there is no middle ground.
Idea 3 - My friend and I are putting together a Buffyverse virtual series set around the southern city of Hope, Louisiana. There will be some crossovers, but all in all, it is pretty self contained.
Idea 4 -I want to do a road trip short story: I just like the idea of Dawn listening to like 50 Cent, and everyone being terrified of her after that. I stole that idea from Preacher, but it will get warped enough to make a good ten page story.
Well, that's all I got for now. If you guys have any suggestions on what to start next (i know everyone here favors the Kennedy story ). But let me know what you think of my ideas anyway. Brainstorming with people is lots of fun.

Maybe have her experience something that makes her unable to fight, like in Helpless or that first season ep with the kids where buffy was ill. Or, have her get in a situation where there can be no physical fighting solution, only an emotional one. Demon of the week optional. (OK, I haven't read your fic, but I just got a bunch of ideas for stuff for her without fighting - no not sex related)

Idea 2 -
Sounds a bit like my Marci (Invisible Girl) fic I'm never going to finish. Though there is no demons in that. But I also have read too much Tom Clancy and wrote a paper on the Colombian drug trade, which she's being sent to take care of. There are people who like Riley. My best friend loves him. (Mainly Marc Blucas, but Riley too.) You can find an outlet for that. A good story is a good story.

Also interesting. It would frighten me. hehehe
If you havce multiple ideas, and you like them. Write them all. Go with whatever one you are thinking of. THat way it's fresh and you don't forget anything good. It'll take hugely longer to finish, but you won't lose anything you like. If the last one is a short story and you feel good about getting it down, I'd say to get that out of the way. But go with whatever one you think will take you the furthest in a signle sitting. Which one feels the most vital. The one clamoring hardest to get out. Write that one down before it escapes another way. hehehe

We're kind of talking about fanfic in general. You should probably read the whole thread, though, if you want to get an idea of what we've been discussing.

I love to write to fics where its not like an expected ending... mostly im not so much in the romance department mostly my stories have to deal with dramatic situations... right now my characters dont involve me personally or my life but it is something that i wish i would see if the show still continued.
